COMMISSIONING A STAINED GLASS WINDOW OR PANEL

🌿 The Commissioning Process
Commissioning a stained glass piece is a creative and collaborative experience. Whether you’re dreaming of a window, door panel, or hanging artwork, I guide you through each stage to ensure the final piece reflects your vision and complements its setting beautifully.
1. Initial Consultation
-
A site visit can be arranged to discuss your ideas and take preliminary measurements.
-
You’re also welcome to visit my garden studio in West Sussex to explore glass samples and develop concepts together.
-
If you’re further afield, we can work seamlessly via email or phone—remote commissions are very welcome.
-
There is no charge for this initial consultation, and I can usually provide a ballpark estimate at this stage.
2. Design Development
-
After our first conversation, I begin gathering inspiration, references, and visual cues to shape the design direction.
-
A formal quote is provided once the scope is clear.
-
I then create small-scale colour sketches based on our discussions.
-
A 30% deposit is required to proceed with the design work.
3. Final Measurements & Glass Selection
-
A second site visit is arranged to confirm precise measurements.
-
We select the glass together—either in the studio, at your location, or by post if you’re commissioning from a distance.
-
Once the design is approved, I produce a full-size drawing (known as a cartoon), which can be refined if needed.
4. Crafting the Panel
-
The making process begins with glass cutting, followed by any painting and kiln firing.
-
The panel is then leaded, soldered, and cemented to complete its structure.
-
Please allow 3–6 months for completion, depending on the complexity of the design.
5. Installation
-
Installation can be arranged if you prefer not to fit the panel yourself.
-
Payment for fitting is made directly between you and the installer.
